Benefit Bingo

Hit and miss with Benefit Cosmetics on Hello Terri Lowe, UK beauty blog.

Oh Benefit cosmetics, the brand I love to hate and hate to love. The other day I was passing through Harvey Nichols and spotted some of the Benefit skincare which I was considering buying on my way. After asking one question about their new Dream Screen, which is essentially a sunscreen for your face which adds a lovely dewy finish in a light weight kinda way, I found myself sitting in the chair having my face done by the lovely assistant. And she was lovely. Very lovely indeed. So lovely in fact, that she made me part with some Harvey Nics vouchers I have been coveting for months and I left with a little bag containing £56 worth of goodies (I had £55's worth of vouchers FYI). The reason this blog post is called 'Benefit Bingo' is basically because I find Benefit cosmetics are just so hit and miss. Some products I really love, and some I absolutely loathe (I'm looking at you porefessional, and every box blusher, which actually are quite good but I hate the cardboard packaging). And it seems this has happened again with my latest batch of products from there.  Despite actually being in there for a good 45 minutes I still ended up panic buying items which weren't all that... And once again, some things I LOVE. One thing I DISLIKE. But that's probably down to principle actually...

So let's start with the GOOOOOOOD. Never in my life would I have thought that I would part with money (read; vouchers) for a foundation. And even after I had tried this whilst sitting the the Benefit seat of glory I still wasn't sure. It didn't seem to perform any kind of miracle at the time, so why I bought it I don't know... But I'm SO glad I did!! The colour match is PERFECT. I actually thought that there were only 3 shades in the range of the new Benefit Big Easy foundation (or I think they're actually dubbing it a BB cream). There are actually 6 shades in the the range and I was matched as 'light/medium', which is the 3rd lightest that they do. I'm glad I was colour matched because I have this awful habit of just buying the lightest foundation in any range, and kidding myself I am that pale, but it always turns out I'm not and the ghost face could be easily avoided by going a few shades darker. Big Easy itself is a lovely lightweight base which smoothes on effortlessly with your finger tips and bends like a dream. You can build up more coverage really easily, even over the top of where the formula has 'dried' in to a light powder like finish. It still blends in really well and leaves you with an even and light feeling base. When I say it dries 'powder-like' that immediately makes me think of a heavy, cakey, matte foundation. But it's not like that at all. It's more like a soft to the touch feel which isn't sticky or 'wet' like some foundations can remain when you've blended them in. Whether I would repurchase this still remains up in the air though, as I'm going to let it run it's course and we will see if it improves my skin in any way in the long run. At the moment it's great, I do like it, but who knows what miraculous transformation it's skin smoothing formula.

Secondly we actually have a repurchase - hurrah! I bought this little Benefit b.right skincare set about 2 years ago now, and loved the products inside, and the price. It's a shame they've upped it from the original £10 to £14.50, but regardless of that I still would buy it again (I did, obviously, derp). The stand out products for me from the set are the moisture prep lotion and the triple performing facial emulsion, both of which are in the cute little glass bottles. I found my skin loved both of these bad boys and really, if I was sensible I should of actually invested in the full size of BOTH instead of this smaller set and the next disappointing product that I bought... Which is the brand new Benefit Benebalm, which is the new hydrating lip product released by benefit to compliment the classic Benetint cheek and lip stain. They have released a range of these lip balms to compliment the various little pots and I gotta say, I'm dead disappointed. It's just another lip balm which promises to deliver something special, but it's not, it's just a bloody lip balm. And it cost £14.50. The trouble with cosmetics is that you can't really take them back when they're just a bit shit, so I'm trying to use this on a daily basis just to get my moneys worth. Don't get me wrong, it's not the worse product in the world, but it's just lame and over priced. The colour pay off is non existent and the moisturising effects are of a similar standard, not lasting very long at all. I'd probably pull my face at paying a fiver for it to be honest, but I guess this is partly my own fault because it was a panic buy to use up the remaining balance of my vouchers. I just thought at the time the colour would be more vibrant that invisible and my lips would be as soft as a baby's butt. But nope. It's just a bit rubbish really.

  6. I have the exact same issue with Benefit - hated the Porefesional and dont get the hype over They're real. I try to avoid the counter as much as poss now because, apart from being on a year long beauty spending ban, I get uscked in by the packagaing more than anything and end up buying stuff just to try it...which at the prices they charge can be a costly mistake...ive avctually got a broning kit sitting in my stash that i bought on sale a while ago...I've already kinda told myself that it was probably a waste of money but i still really wnat to give it a go and try and love it..seems I'm Beauty BiPolar as well as just the regular kind lol

  7. I'm the same with Benefit, I thought I was quite a big fan of theirs but then when I sat and thought about it I realised I probably dislike more of their products than I like (although I haven't tried that many due to the price). I'm a big fan of They're Real mascara (although as I said, not of the price) and I've recently discovered I really like Benetint but I don't get on with Porefessional at all (just doesn't do anything for me) and the box powders I'm just a bit meh. I think their products are quite overpriced and it puts me off trying things in case I don't like them x
