Fancy Foolproof Foils

Essence hello foils, foil manicure range, available at Wilkinson on Hello Terri Lowe beauty blog.

It seems that the whole fancy pants thing of seeing what ridiculous objects one can place on to their nails has calmed down a bit now. From chalkboard manicures (ew), to feathers sealed on to your nails and I still shudder at the flash in the pan that was that bloody cavier manicure that seemed to start it all in the first place. Alas, despite initially disliking all of these trends, I still tried them all - mostly with little success. The cavier manicure just fell off, the feather ones looked messy and once I paid good money for the Ciate foil manicure set too. The Ciate Colourfoil manicure was actually quite good to begin with; I liked how it looked and it was a simple enough concept. However, the kit itself was a let down. Despite having a nice selection of foils to play with, the 'glue' which came with it really lacked. In fact, I think the glue in the set was pretty much just eyelash glue. I found that after a few days of wear the tacky glue would somehow come to the surface on parts of the nail which wasn't covered by the foil, which felt gross. I was also disappointed by the lack of clear top coat in the set too.

When I found the Essence 'Hello Foils' selection recently, I couldn't resist giving the idea of foil nails another try after seeing the price. For a total of £3.30 you can buy the clear 'transfer solution' varnish and the tube of foil. Both are sold separately, but that's actually a very good idea when you consider the transfer solution will last you a lot longer than the individual packs of foil will. Available in three different designs, the one I went for was this lovely oil slick effect. You simple apply a base coat (I chose Sinful Colours Winterberry, available at Boots for £1.99) and then paint a thin layer of the solution on. Leave it for around 60 seconds and then place the foil transfer down on to your and then whip it off! You're left with a generous layer of beautiful foil on the surface of your nail, which you then just smooth and pat down, finishing with another layer of the transfer solution to seal it.

I found this kit a lot less fiddly than the Ciate version. The foil seemed thick to touch, but when transferred on to the nail it lies flat and doesn't feel like a heavy layer at all. It lasts for a good few days before I feel the need to start picking it off, but it is easily removed anyway with nail varnish remover. In fact, it's even easier to remove than glitter polishes and the like.

  5. I'm not a fan of many nail gimmicks, the thought of caviar nails makes me feel rather ill. Foil nails however is the one look I've quite liked, galactic chic! I'll definitely investigate these products if I decide to brave the foil trend, thanks for the recommendation!
